Building a Sustainable Startup: Challenges and Opportunities

Published on: 21 December 2020 7:30pm to 9pm (Zoom).

SPECS, IEEE Power & Energy Society (IEEE PES) Singapore Chapter, Singapore FinTech Association (SFA) and Blockchain Association of Singapore (BAS) brings you the first joint webinar for members to propel and inspire local startups!

With COVID19 and safe distancing in place, IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Singapore Local Chapter is unable to organize our annual dinner physically this year. To adjust to the current situation, we will be organizing our annual get-together virtually. This year, we will replace the entertainment segment with a sharing on “Building a Sustainable Startup: Challenges and Opportunities”. As in previous years, we will provide updates on our Chapter’s activities and present the Outstanding Volunteer Award.

The sharing on “Building a Sustainable Startup: Challenges and Opportunities” is co-organised with the Smart Grid & Power Electronics Consortium Singapore (SPECS). SPECS is a national consortium that is hosted at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore). It will enable companies to work with publicly-funded Institute of Higher Learning researchers to translate intellectual property around Energy Grid 2.0 technologies into solutions for deployment and commercialisation. The consortium will focus on areas in advanced power electronics such as solid state transformers, energy management systems such as load and generation balancing, and cybersecurity. Technologies in these areas will help to achieve energy savings, and support a smarter grid system that is secure and resilient. Through academic-industry collaborations, SPECS will enable companies to access these technologies and translate them into commercially-viable products and services.

The speaker is Dr Ernie Teo, Chief Technology Officer of a start-up and Vice-Chairman of Blockchain Association of Singapore. He will share his personal experience on his motivation in starting his own business, the challenges and opportunities, and some tips on how to keep it sustainable.

The outline of the sharing:

1. Journey from an Academic to Corporate to Startup

2. Getting started in Blockchain and a quick overview of what is Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies

3. Startup challenges & opportunities

a. Finding the right partners

b. Product market fit

c. Investment

d. Hiring

e. Operating the company

Many thanks to SFA and BAS for supporting this partnership with SPECS and IEEE PES Singapore Chapter, which resulted in a succesful evening event.
